About Sophie

i'm a traveler. love to pack everything i need and live out of the suitcase, be settled wherever i am. at first, I studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, a private college in Los Angeles. Realizing the biz of fashion isn't for me, I then focused on fine arts with specialization in computer graphics at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Upon graduation, I moved to New York where I spent several years designing book covers for St. Martin's Press. I love books, so this was the perfect job for me, creating book covers, working in publishing. But the travel bug never left me and I just had to move around. After moving to LA, then Taipei, then Portland, then Newport Beach, I'm now settled in San Francisco where I'm painting and drawing and make things. During my travels to japan, i had an epiphany, and i began making art again. this whole thing traces back to the earlier decision to stop painting after i graduated, it was due to school. while in school, u r asked to death about why paint? painting is dead. i understand being an artist is a selfish choice. there might not be anyone interested, ever, in my paintings. why do u paint? what for? perhaps i don't have any social or political view in my art. nor am i trying to say anything of depth. but i just love painting and making things. it's an act of meditation for me, to do what i do. and i want to share it. share the beauty i create. perhaps someone out there may like it. this makes me happy. simple. why do i care if there's a philosophic or psychoanalytical reason to why paint? but i just simply like it. and i don't care.
Light & shadow are the dances of love.—Rumi
